Mertensia virginica, commonly known as Virginia Bluebells, are born during mid-spring. Starting as sweet pink buds that open into light blue trumpet-shaped petals, these flowers create a bundle of color. The branches and arching stems bearing these clusters of lavender-blue flowers can grow up to two feet tall! The long trunks of the flower make it difficult for bumblebees to reach the pollen, but butterflies are able to help pollinate. The flower’s anatomy makes it easy for them to perch on and enjoy the nectar.
